Effects of nursing intervention based on IMB model and mind mapping on disease cognition and mood state of family members of children with epilepsy

Abstract

Objective To explore the effects of nursing intervention based on information-motivation-behavioral skills (IMB) model combined with mind mapping on disease cognition and mood state of family members of children with epilepsy. Methods A total of 152 family members of children with epilepsy admitted to Mianyang Central Hospital from March 2024 to December 2024 were included for analysis and divided into the observation group (n=76) and the control group (n=76) according to the random number table method. The control group was given conventional nursing intervention, while the observation group received nursing intervention based on this combination of the IMB model and mind mapping. The scores of the self-rating depression and anxiety scale (SDS, SAS), epilepsy knowledge and attitude questionnaire, caregiver burden scale (CBI), and Herth hope scale (HHI) of the family members of the two groups of children before and after the intervention were compared; Compare the number of epileptic seizures and the number of traumas of the two groups of children before and after the intervention, as well as the satisfaction of the children's families with the medical staff. Results The SDS and SAS scores of the families of the two groups of children after the intervention were both lower than those before the intervention, and the scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group. The scores of epilepsy knowledge and attitude questionnaires in both groups after the intervention were increased compared with those before the intervention, and the scores in the observation group were higher than those in the control group. The CBI scores of the family members of the two groups of children decreased after the intervention compared with those before the intervention, and the score of the observation group was lower than that of the control group. The HHI scores of both groups after the intervention were increased compared with those before the intervention, and the score of the observation group was higher than that of the control group. The number of epileptic seizures and the number of traumas in both groups of children after the intervention were lower than those before the intervention, and the observation group was lower than the control group. During the intervention period, the comparison of nursing satisfaction in the observation group was significantly higher than in the control group. Conclusion Compared with conventional health education, nursing intervention based on the combination of IMB model and mind mapping can significantly improve family members' cognition of the disease and improve negative emotions such as anxiety and depression, thus improving the quality of life of family members of children with epilepsy.
