Objective To compare stability outcomes after mandibular arch orthodontic treatment for mild to moderate crowding malocclusions between a self-ligating system and a conventional system. Methods From March 2021 to March 2024, 40 patients who received orthodontic treatment in our hospital were randomly divided into two groups according to 1∶1 allocation ratio: self-ligating system (n=20) or conventional system (n=20). Orthodontic study models were collected at the debonding stage (T1), 1 month (T2), 3 months (T3), and 6 months (T4) after debonding, and the mandibular arch variables assessed were as follows: index of irregularity, intercanine width, first and second interpremolar width, intermolar width and arch length. Results Incisor irregularity for both the conventional and self-ligating systems increased significantly during the 6-month retention period. For both systems, the overall changes in intercanine width, first interpremolar width, and intermolar width from T1 to T4 were not statistically significant. No statistically significant differences in incisor irregularity or arch dimensions were recorded during the 6-month retention period between the self-ligating and conventional systems. The changes in intercanine width, first interpremolar width, second interpremolar width, intermolar width, and arch length during the 6 months in both systems were less than 1 mm. Conclusion During the 6-month retention period, the stability of self-ligating system and conventional system after orthodontic treatment of mild to moderate crowded malocclusion with mandibular arch is similar.
