Abstract

Objective It aims to explore the impact of social support on the self-advocacy ability of breast cancer patients, and to provide a strong basis for the development of personalized support plans and the enhancement of patients' autonomous decision-making ability. Methods A general information questionnaire, the Female Cancer Self-Advocacy Scale, the Comprehending Social Support Scale, and the Self-Identity Scale were used to investigate 364 breast cancer patients in the Breast Oncology Department of a tertiary hospital in Hunan Province. Results Self-advocacy and comprehension social support scores of 364 breast cancer patients were (77.25±8.99) and (62.92±8.32), respectively, and Pearson's correlation analysis showed that self-advocacy was positively correlated with comprehension social support (r=0.602, P<0.01). Informed decision-making dimension, effective communication dimension, and effective social support dimension were positively correlated with comprehending social support (r values of 0.605, 0.442, and 0.300, respectively, all P<0.01), and the analysis results showed that age, residence status, knowledge of breast cancer-related knowledge, whether or not to functionally exercise, and comprehending social support were the influencing factors of patients' ability to self-advocacy. Social support was an independent influence on patient self-advocacy, explaining 45% of the total variance. Conclusion The self-advocacy ability of breast cancer patients is at an intermediate to high level, and self-advocacy ability is closely related to social support; future research and clinical practice should focus on enhancing the social support system of breast cancer patients to promote the development of their self-advocacy ability. By strengthening social support, healthcare providers can effectively optimize treatment outcomes and improve the overall psychological health of patients, which has important clinical significance and potential application value.
