Objective To explore the application value of compound polymyxin B ointment combined with vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) in burns. Methods A total of 122 burn patients in our hospital from June 2020 to June 2022 were selected and randomly divided into two groups using a random number table method, with 61 patients in each group. Both groups underwent VSD treatment. The control group was treated with 1% sulfadiazine silver cream, while the study group was treated with compound polymyxin B ointment. The therapeutic effects and adverse reactions of the two groups were observed, as well as various clinical symptom scores, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and skin barrier function before and after 21 days of treatment. Results The total effective rate of treatment in the study group was 88.52%, which was higher than that in the control group (73.77%). After 21 days of treatment, the study group exhibited lower levels of redness, swelling, blisters, secretion exudation, and visual analogue scale (VAS) scores compared to the control group. Additionally, the levels of VEGF and bFGF in the study group were higher than those in the control group after 21 days of treatment. Furthermore, the skin stratum corneum moisture content in the study group was higher than that in the control group after 21 days of treatment, while the transepidermal water loss was lower. The wound infection rate and scar formation rate in the study group (0.00% and 3.28%, respectively) were lower than those in the control group (11.47% and 13.11%, respectively). Conclusion Compound polymyxin B ointment helps alleviate clinical symptoms in burn patients, promote angiogenesis, improve skin barrier function, enhance treatment efficacy, and reduce adverse reactions.
