Abstract:Objective To understand the current status of AIDS knowledge and anti-AIDS life skills among college students in a school of medicine located in Changsha, as well as to analyze the factors influencing the anti-AIDS life skills of college students. Methods The stratified whole-group sampling method was employed to extract college students from a school of medicine located in Changsha as the research subjects, so as to carry out a questionnaire survey regarding AIDS knowledge and anti-AIDS life skills. Meanwhile, the data analysis was conducted on the results, with P<0.05 as the difference being statistically relevant. Results The awareness rate of students in school of medicine about AIDS is 90.91%, their possession of anti-AIDS life skills is 51.08%, while their risk identification skills, negotiation skills, help-seeking skills and refusal skills are 82.68%, 55.41%, 11.68% and 64.94% respectively. The multivariate unconditional logistic regression analysis demonstrated that female students are 2.26 times (95% CI: 1.28-1.82) more likely than male students to be equipped with anti-AIDS life skills; 5.35 times (95% CI: 2.38-12.01) more likely to be in their fourth year than in their first year; 2.52 times more likely to be willing to perform HIV testing than those who are not (95% CI.1.07-5.94); 1.83 times more students in cities or towns than in rural areas (95% CI: 1.03-3.26). In addition, high AIDS knowledge (OR=1.36, 95% CI=1.02-1.82) scores serves as a facilitator of possessing anti-AIDS life skills among college students in school of medicine. Conclusion The college students in school of medicine are equipped with a relatively excellent level of AIDS knowledge, whereas the rate of possessing anti-AIDS life skills is comparatively low. It is imperative to further reinforce the training of anti-AIDS skills for students in school of medicine who are male, of lower grades, have no intention to conduct HIV testing, are of rural household registration, as well as with relatively insufficient level of AIDS knowledge. In the meantime, it is advisable to improve the level of AIDS knowledge among college students, to cultivate awareness of healthy behaviors, to further upgrade the anti-AIDS life skills of college students, in addition to advancing the implementation of the education on AIDS prevention and control in school of medicine.
